Arriving in Pontorson on your walking holiday in France, you will immediately be struck by the beauty of the region that straddles Normandy and Brittany. Next on your Normandy walking tours is Mont Saint-Michel, one of the most recognisable sites in France.  Protected under the UNESCO Heritage its bay forms as the natural border between Normandy and Brittany. Mont Saint-Michel is famous for the impressive Benedictine monastery, the target of pilgrims from all over the world.

An additional scenic highlight is the island Jersey with beautiful beaches, breath-taking cliffs, lovely dunes, colourful flowers and picturesque ports. Enjoy French savoir-vivre with a glass of wine and excellent seafood.

Itinerary

Day 1Individual arrival to Pontorson

The little village of Pontorson lies on the border between the two regions of Normandy and Brittany, about 9 km from the bay of Mont Saint-Michel.

Day 2Pontorson to Mont Saint-Michel 7.5 miles 12km, 35m up, walking time 3-4 hours.

Today you walk along the Cousnon river to the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. You will pass by pretty villages and maybe visit a mill. Mont Saint-Michel is a fortified village situated on an island. On the top of a rock escarpment, a monastery inhabited by a dozen monks is still situated. You stay overnight on the mainland and can enjoy the special view over the Mont-Saint-Michel.

Day 3Mont Saint-Michel to Dol-de-Bretagne 13.1 miles 21 km, 230 up, walking time 5.5-6 hours. (you can shorten this day walk 10.6 miles 17km or 8.1 miles 13km).

After crossing the marshes west of Couesnon river you leave Normandy for the Brittany (Bretagne). You walk through a green undulating landscape, dotted with little houses and grazing cattle to the pretty villages of Roz-sur-Couesnon and Sainte-Broladre. You will spend the night on the mainland. The half-timbered houses belong to the best-maintained examples of Brittany.

Day 4Dol-de-Bretagne to Cancale 9.4-12.5 miles 15-20km, 180 up, walking time 4.5-5 hours

Today on your walk the first interesting point of today is Mont-Dol with its beautiful church. Then, you will follow the walking trail by an oyster park for several kilometres. You will find the last 5 km to Cancale offers superb views across the bay. You stay overnight in a hotel on the port. Cancale enjoys the reputation of being the capital of the oyster. It is said that the local oysters are the best and freshest available, why not try some and judge for yourself.

Day 5Cancale Loop 8.7 miles 14km, 180m up, 3.5 hours walking

Today you walk to the Grouin headland. Remember to look out to sea today as in this section you often see seals and dolphins basking. You shall also walk through the Iles des Landes bird sanctuary and Iles Chausey and Granville.

Day 6Cancale to Saint Malo 6.1-12.2 miles 10-20km, 2.5-5 hours walking time.

In the morning you will be picked up from your accommodation and select where in the walk to be dropped off. You will follow the GR34 walk along the sea with many wonderful views. Passing Rotheneuf and eventually to St Malo. You will have many opportunities today to dip your feet into the sea.

Day 7Departure after breakfast

JERSEY EXTENSION - Day 5 Cancale Loop and Transfer to St Malo 8.7 miles 14km, 180m up, 3.5 hours walking time.

Today you walk to the Grouin headland. Remember to look out to sea today as in this section you often see seals and dolphins basking. You shall also walk through the Iles des Landes bird sanctuary and Iles Chausey and Granville. In the afternoon you shall be picked up in Cancale and taken to your accommodation in St Malo.

Day 6 Round trip to Port of Rozel 11.8 miles 19km, 360 up, walking time 5 hours.

In the morning you take the early morning ferry to the Island of Jersey with your luggage.  At the St Helier ferry terminal, it is a short bus ride to the harbour town of Gorey.  You shall spend the next two nights here.  Once checked in you can start your hike to Rozel which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the harbour, bay and sea. The higher you climb the more beautiful the views. There are some steep ascents to tackle as you go from bay to bay. The pretty harbour town of Rozel with its old granite cottages invites you to stop for lunch before continuing back to your hotel.

Day 7Round trip to the south-west and Grouville 9.3 miles 15km, 178 up,  walking time 4 hours.

Today is a slightly shorter trip. From your hotel, you go inland and walk around one of Jersey’s large freshwater reservoirs. A lovely trail through a rural area will take you to Grouville Parish church. A little further you will hit the coast for a super walk between the sea and the Royal Jersey Golf course. Once you get to Fort William you are almost home!

Day 8 Jersey to St Malo

Today you take the ferry back to Saint Malo. Normally the ferry is in late afternoon arriving early evening. This allows for some additional time on Jersey to explore before leaving.

Day 9Departure from Saint Malo.
