Welcome to Hooked on Walking Holidays and our walking holiday in Catalonia ( Catalunya ). This hiking vacation allows you to explore the green and historic region around Barcelona and is available as a seven night self guided walking tour
Near the metropolis of Barcelona, we have designed this walking tour through very old and typical Catalan countryside. A truly varied landscape with canyons, Mediterranean forest and open fields, scattered with intimate historical monuments and nice little towns. A special feature of this trip is the accommodation in historic farmhouses from the 11th, 15th and 18th centuries.
1st March to the 31st October ( Level 2-3 self guided tour )
Day 1 Arrival in Tavernoles
Arrival at an authentic 15th century rural accommodation in Tavérnoles, near the town of Vic. The monumental gothic centre of Vic has a lively Mediterranean atmosphere. It can easily be reached by train from Barcelona (1,5 hours).
Day 2: Circular walk in the surroundings of Tavernoles.
Your options today are either a short stroll through the countryside of 3,5 hours along Romanesque chapels or a longer walk (7 hours) to the Romanesque church of St. Pere de Casseres, beautifully located on a hilltop above the Sau River.
Day 3
A longer walk today (7,5 to 8 hours). First from Tavernol es down to the Sau Canyon and then up again, along steep footpaths to the Tavertet eagles nest. Your accommodation is a reconstructed farmhouse, dating as far back as the 11th century.
Day 4 Around Tavertet
A quiet day that you can spend in the surroundings of Tavertet. A short circular walk (3,5 hours) takes you a little bit higher up to the plateau of Tavertet, with splendid views of the Pyrenees and the canyons of the Sau. Of course, you can also enjoy the views from the farmhouse terrace. They are almost as good!
Day 5 Sant Julia de Vilatorta
Day-walk along a very narrow footpath on the edge of the canyon back to the Sau River and then up again to the plateau of Vic, before you turn south to the little town of Saint Julia de Vilatorta. Luxury and good food at a typical 19th century hotel.
Day 6 El Brull
D ay-walk through woods of Mediterranean oaks and pine trees in the Montseny National Park, one of Unesco’s Biosphere Reserves because of its variety in geological formations and climate zones (6,5 hours). The rural accommodation in El Brull (18th century) is also a working biological farm.
Day 7 Around El Brull
Two circular walks around El Brull: a short one (3 hours) to an interesting Iberian archaeological site and a longer one which leads you to the top of the Matagalls, balcony above Montseny (5,5 hours).
Day 8 Tour complete
Your holiday comes to an end after breakfast. A taxi will take you to the railway station in Seva where you can get back to Barcelona or to your car if you have left it at the first accommodation.
Difficulty: Day-walks of 3,5 to 8 hours during which you climb and descend an average of 600m (maximum 800m).
Accommodation: 6 nights in historic rural farmhouses that have been converted to authentic rural accommodations, and a one-night stay in a comfortable hotel from the 19th century. Normally the rooms have en-suite bathrooms, except on days 1 and 2 when you may have to share bathrooms.
