Welcome to Hooked on Walking Holidays and our walking holidays in Slovenia. This particular hiking vacation in Slovenia through the wonderful Slovenian Alps has been graded as a level 2 walking tour. We have developed a short break walking tour slightly easier than our Slovenian Alps walking tour. This hike is a collection of different grade walks, however none of them have a climbers rate. In general you will walk mountain ridges, mountain meadows, valley floors, slowly descending from east to west. The landscape has an Alpine character. Your starting location Jezersko means “ place with the lake “ . When the glacier melted after the last Ice Age a large lake was formed which remains to this day. From here you walk to the world famous Bled and its lake with an old church on an island in the middle. Why not stay as extra nights in Bled where you can have time in the town or explore with a further walk.
Available 14th May to 6th October
Self Guided tour
Day 1 Arrival to Jezersko
Arrive to this small romantic village which is situated on the Slovenia - Austrian border, north of Ljubljana. Its setting in a basin is among the peaks of the Stone Alps which makes it a perfect starting point for this trip.
Day 2 Jezersko circular walk 640m up/down around 2 hours of walking
A nice warm up walk to Ceska koca mountain hut. The walk leads us just above the forest line to one of the oldest alpine huts in Slovenia. You will return via the Shepherds Lake.
Day 3 Jezersko to Preddvor 6 hours with down/up 1100/900 m.
A longer hike down to the valley. The days walk begins with a short transfer to the starting point. Following a narrow valley one ascends Baseljsko sedlo, just before reaching a mountain hut on Kokra saddle. This is a wonderful viewpoint and a great setting for a tasty lunch. The afternoon walk descends through hillside villages to Preddvor and past Crnava Lake to our hotel
Day 4 Preddvor to Trzic 4 hours walk with ascent of 200 m.
A walk in western direction takes you across several typical villages of the area, wide meadows of alpine flowers dotted with famous Slovenian hay-drying racks. Trzic used to be a town of shoemakers, should you need new walking shoes there is plenty of choice there. The walk goes at the foot of Karawanke range, in the distance the Julian Alps peaks are visible.
Day 5 Trzic to Begunje 4 hours walk with up / down 250/700m
A short car transfer to the border and starting point at Ljubelj. A bit unusually the hike begins by a short underground walk through a tunnel, once dug to shorten the merchants route connecting Carniola with Carinthia. Continuing towards the westerly direction if follows the trails of shepherds, passing wide meadows of alpine flowers. Walking through the quiet valley of Draga, underneath ruins of the ancient Kamen castle, soon one reaches Begunje – home of famous Avseniki musicians.
Day 6 Begunje to Bled 5 hours walk up/down 200/150m
This is an easy days walk. Leaving Begunje one first climbs to the little St. Petrus church, in days of Turkish raids an important sentry point. A longer ridge walk follows, with great views of Julian Alps range on the opposite Sava valley side. Before reaching Bled, there is time to explore Vintgar gorge , a canyon of the River Radovna, part of Triglav National park.
DAY 7 (car transfer) POKLJUKA – USKOVNICA SADLE – VOJE – LAKE BOHINJ 5 hrs, 7.5 miles 12 km up 200m.
Today you will be driven by car up to the Pokljuka Plateau from which you will begin your hike across mountain pastures and passing old farmhouses where you will come to a viewing point providing outstanding views into the Bohinj Valley. As you descend you can stop at the little historic village of Studor where you can visit the museum and see how people lived 150 years ago. Your final destination is Lake Bohinj, the jewel in the heart of the Triglav National Park, and the small settlement of Ribčev Laz (Fisherman’s Pass).
