This hiking vacation is a wonderful two country hike from the Austrian Salzkammergut region and across to Germany, indeed Bavaria to be precise. This walking tour is available as a level 2-3 self guided holiday. Between the two famous lakes, Lake Wolfgangsee in Austria and Lake Konigsee in Germany, a first rate hiking territory stretches along the border between Austria and Bavaria in Germany. You will walk from the famous White Horse Inn in St. Wolfgang across the green slopes of Osterhorn Mountains to the famous Watzmann and the eagle’s nest high above the mysterious green Lake Konigsee. The stunning panoramic views are worth every minute of your walk.

Level 2-3 tour

Day 1 – Individual arrival in Salzburg and onto Lake Wolfgangsee
Arrival to the wonderful city of Salzburg, if you arrive early take a look around this Mozart city, the old town, castle and quaint streets. Then make your own way ( or by private transfer ) to Lake Wolfgangsee around 45-60 minutes out of town.

Day 2  - Lake Wolfgangsee – Lake Schwarzensee – Gorge- and Lake Promenade to the hotel
The tour starts in the pilgrim town of St. Wolfgang, where you should visit the famous altar and charming town houses. A comfortable walk on the Sattelweg to a precious little mountain lake, Lake Schwarzensee. Idyllically nestling in midst of the surrounding summits and an alpine pasture. Return through a gorge and along the lakeside to the hotel. Maybe one of the most beautiful hikes of Salzkammergut. Walking time 6 hours, 13.3 miles , 21.5 km.

Day 3 – Alpine pasture tour into the Osterhorn mountains
Passing little hamlets and alpine pastures you will walk deep into the mountains today. Deep gorges and valleys cut through the Osterhorn mountain group and the slopes are grazed by cattle. Again and again you encounter the contrast between cultured and native nature. Overnight in a very comfortable hut Walking time 5.5 hours , 10.2 miles 16.6km , up 950m , down 285m.

Day 4 – Summit walks
Today you will walk up to the summits of Osterhorn and Hohen Zinken within the Osterhorn mountain massive. A gentle upward trail passing wonderful alpine pastures with views deep into the alps. Overnight at the hut. Walking time 3-4 hours , 6 miles 9.5km up/down 680m.

Day 5 – High trail to the mountain village of Saint Koloman
In the morning you will start walking up to the high trail from summit to summit with sensational views back to the alpine pastures and over 30 summits. Passing a little hut next to a romantic lake closes the day and you will enjoy your dinner in the hotel. Walking time 5.5 hours, 10 miles 16 km , 413m up, 803m down.

Day 6 – Through wild and idyllic Bluntautal valley up to the summit Jenner
Transfer to the idyllic Bluntautal valley, cut deep into the steep rocks. On both sides the rock walls seem to scrape the blue sky. Slowly you wind your way up to alpine cabin Stahl Haus, where you can rest and enjoy a sensational panoramic view and local food. One last climb and you stand on the summit of Mount Jenner with stunning views of the Watzmann, the peaks of the Stony Sea and the deep green waters of Lake Konigssee. Downhill by cable car towards the lake. Walking time 6.5 hours , 9.7 miles 15.2km up 1200m.

Day 7 – Tour completed, individual departure or extra days

Difficulty
4 to 7 hours walking per day with some climbs of 800 metres, some level of fitness and experience is needed.

Accommodation
4 nights in comfortable 3 star hotels and 2 nights in a comfortable mountain hut.

Minimum number on guided walk is 4 persons

How to get there
By plane to Salzburg and then a short transfer by bus to the first hotel or we can organize your transfer from the airport in Salzburg. A private transfer from Salzburg airport to the first hotel is £88 (1-4 persons). return by public bus to salzburg is around 1-2 hours.
